The Business Bakery: 100 Day Goal

Hi there,

It feels like it's been ages, considering that my last few posts were completed in quick succession. I've been struggling to decide what to do next in terms of what new work to create for my portfolio. As I said in a previous post sometimes it's just hard to get started. Last week I came across a post on Facebook about the "100 Day Goal" from the Business Bakery and it immeditaely peaked my interest.

So I'm publicy declaring that I'm taking part (as of 1st May) and hoping to achieve my goal by 8th August, in 100 days time. My goal is to partially illustrate an existing children's book. I do have a story of my own that I've written that I'd like to illustrate at a later date. Currently the idea of illustrating an entire children's book in my spare time seems unachievable as there is so much work to do. With the 100 Day Goal the idea is to set manageable targets. If I follow the current layout of said book then I need to fully illustrate 26 images. I know that I won't have the time to do this in 100 days. The reason being I want to find/re-define my drawing style and improve my layout and compostion skills etc. I also work full time and try to exercise several times a week. With that in mind my goal is to have 26 illustrations roughed out, 6 fully drawn and outlined and 3 completely coloured up and finished.

The book I have chosen is "How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth" by Michelle Robinson and beautifully illustrated by Kate Hindley. I have chosen this because it's a lovely story and easily brings to mind fun images with the contrast between the size of the girl and her surroundings and the huge size of the mammoth. I've owned this book for a while but I haven't looked at it for some time. Fortunately I can't rememeber the illustrations too well as I want to create something totally different and not be influenced by those. I do love Kate Hindley's work though!

I'm really excited to have started this project and I've already written my 100 hundred actions list and made a start. It was really hard admittedly, but once I'd broken the task in hand down into mico taks it felt much more achievable. My first task is to find new illustrators to be inspired by. What a lovely task to begin with. It's always good to find new inspiration, keep an eye on the competition and lean new skills and techniques.

I'll do some regular updates on my progress and keep you updated on the high and lows. Right, I'd better get cracking ...
